Smart cup capabilities

QR Code

Each smart cup features a unique QR code that’s laser-etched for durability, so it won’t wear off over time.

The QR code allows each cup to be individually identified and tracked within the reuse system. When scanned, it connects the cup to the platform and supports things like returns, rewards and user interaction.

It’s a simple, accessible way to power the reuse system, working across smartphones without the need for additional hardware.

RFID

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is a small chip embedded in the base of the smart cup and allows it to communicate with a powered reader.

Unlike QR codes, RFID doesn’t always need to be scanned manually. So cups can be identified automatically at return points, enabling fast, secure “drop and go” returns without the need for manual scanning, helping validate returns quickly and reduce friction for the user.

It’s particularly useful in higher-volume environments like events, workplaces or universities, where speed and accuracy matter.

NFC Chip

An NFC (Near Field Communication) chip is built into the base of the smart cup and allows for easy, contactless interaction – simply tap the cup with a phone to access information.

It’s designed to feel familiar (like contactless payments) and can be used to connect the cup to digital experiences, helping users engage with the system quickly and without friction.

Return Points

Return points are designed to make returning a cup quick and easy.

With RFID-enabled return points, cups can be securely and instantly returned, often without needing to scan anything manually. They can also be GPS-located, making it easy for users to find the nearest return location.

The aim is simple: make returning a cup as easy as possible.

Rewards

Smart returnable systems can offer rewards or incentives such as discounts, points or deposits to encourage users to return their cup. These are typically managed through QR codes, RFID or app-based systems, linking each return to a user.
